How to access the SQL Server

Launching the SQL Server Management Studio 2017

 

  1. Clicking the Windows icon.
  2. Microsoft SQL Server Tools 17.
  3. Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 17.

When the application opens a window called "Connect to Server" will pop up

  1. For the Server type select Database Engine.
  2. Enter COMPSCISQL in the Server Name Text Box.
  3. Select Windows Authentication in the Authentication dropdown box.
  4. Click the “Connect” button.

Once you are connected to the database complete the following:

  1. Right-click Databases in the left pane.
  2. Click Restore Database...
  3. Select the circle next to Device.
  4. Click the box with the three dots (...)

5. A window called "Select backup devices" will pop up click Add.

A window called "Locate Backup File - COMPSCISQL" will pop up

  1. Select what sample database you want.

2. Select OK on each window and the database will be added.

3. The database you chose should then be available under Databases in the left plane.

The students can also create a new database by right-clicking Databases in the left pane and selecting New Database.
